A Disease That Defied Diagnosis

For those who do not care to search for God, he himself paves the way to come to him. It is through a disease unknown to medical science the some discover him. This is what happened to Sajan Varghese.

Two years ago, when Sajan was comfortably settled in Dubai, UAE, a strange malady afflicted him. One day, while he was talking to his friends, he suddenly rose from his seat and began whirling around. Next what seemed like epileptic attacks seized him. The doctors at Rashid Hospital, Dubai, got a CT scan done. This revealed an irregular ring on the left side of his brain. For better diagnosis he was referred for MRI scanning which was promptly carried out at Al-Jaseri.The result was the same. Either this illness was caused by tuberculosis of the brain or a tape worm might have found its way into the brain; a third possibility was that there was a clot in the blood vessel. No surgery was possible until the reason for this strange ring could be discovered. One thing was certain, the doctors said - this would gradually lead to loss of memory and mental disorder. The epileptics fits recurred frequently despite medication. Several other tests including Elisa test and Mantex test were conducted with no beneficial results.

Sajan is the son of a Jacobite priest, Fr. Jacob Roy; his mother, Leelamma is a teacher at St. John's school. A family that believed in God. But there was no daily prayer. When her son became fatally ill, Leelamma began praying ardently, went twice for a retreat at Divine Retreat Centre (DRC) and left her son in the hands of God. Several times she advised Sajan to have his visa canceled, return home and join the retreat. But Sajan turned a deaf ear to her entreaty. It was only after one and a half years of futile treatment and spiritual broken-ness that he traced his steps homewards.

In 1996 June, back in India, he began treatment at Sri Chitra, Trivandrum. He was advised to get a MRI scan done in August. This time Sajan decided to surrender his disease that defied diagnosis at the feet of Jesus and went immediately to DRC for a retreat.

As he listened to the word of God, Sajan became conscious of the uncontrollable hostility and hatred he had been harbouring in the depths of his heart. The Holy Spirit revealed to him the memories he had hitherto kept concealed. Jesus gave him the grace to forgive all those who had hurt him and filled him with love for them. While the auditorium was resounding with the praises of God, Fr. Panackal announced - "Jesus is healing Sajan of the disorder in his brain". Sajan was slow to believe despite the definite signs of the presence of the Holy Spirit within him.

Back in Sri Chitra, the MRI scan revealed to the utter astonishment of the doctors the disappearance of the irregular ring. "How did this happen ?" they wanted to know. Sajan seized the opportunity to testify boldly to the mercy and power of Jesus. "My disease turned out to be a blessing to me", said Sajan. He could savor the sweetness of the love of Jesus and so could his folks at home. To render his heartfelt thanks to God, Sajan attended another retreat in September and gave his witness before thousands.
