Greater Sacrifice                           Read: Amos 5: 14-15,21-24

The holy men and women are also called the “Protomartyrs of Rome.” They were accused of burning Rome by Nero  , who burned Rome to cover his own crimes. Some martyrs were burned as living torches at evening banquets, some crucified, others were fed to wild animals. These martyrs died before Sts. Peter and Paul, and are called “disciples of the Apostles. . . whom the Holy Roman church sent to their Lord before the Apostles’ death.”

Gial and Carla’s mom is in the final stage of liver cancer. To ease her last days, Gail agreed to shoulder the  expenses and bring their mom to the hospital.

Gial sent her driver to pick up her mom. During her short visits to the hospital, she tried to keep the expenses down. She chose a private room in the hospital’s old building where it’s cheaper. She selected a doctor who is a family friend. She limited the medications, stressing there’s no need for heroic efforts. Indeed, she’s generous and practical at the same time.

Carla, for her part, never left her mom’s side. She took a leave from work and hardly slept every night. She gently eased her mom’s fears on the way to the hospital. She cleaned her wounds and kept her comfortable. She monitored her labored breathing  and adjusted the oxygen mask when it slips.

Though both gave up something for love of their mom, I think Carla’s sacrifice is the model of Christian love. Jesus died on a cross to redeem us from sin. Our love for Him should compel us to respond likewise, by giving up our lives for other and for Him.

Reflection:

“I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.”

(2 Samuel 24:24)

Take my life and let it be consecrated, Lord to Thee.
